it was a good year.

Another way I know I'm getting older: While at my parents' this weekend, I went to throw on an old sweatshirt and once I had it on, I realized it said "AHS Field Hockey 1997" 1997?!?! I was in high school in 1997?? 11 years ago?? That made me feel extremely old.

Doesn't 1997 feel like ages ago? I was busy being a freshman in high school and decorating my field hockey stick with pictures of Ricky Martin (I know...wtf), purchasing as much lip gloss as possible, and stalking my crushes by hangng out after school in the field house. But what else was going on in 1997?
  • The Notorious BIG was killed
  • The first Harry Potter book was published
  • Tony Blair became Prime Minister of the UK
  • Louise Woodward was found guilty of baby-shaking (in Newton, MA)
  • First color photograph on the front page of the NYT appeared
  • Princess Diana passed away
  • Tara Lipinski became the world's youngest womens figure skating champion
  • Madeleine Albright becomes the first female Secretary of State
  • Ellen DeGeneres came out
  • South Park debuts
  • The English Patient won the Oscar for best picture
  • Eric Clapton's "Change the World" won the Grammy for record of the year
  • Celine Dion's Falling Into You won the Grammy for album of the year
  • The biggest hit singles were "I'll be Missing You" by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans, "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John, "Barbie Girl" by Aqua, "Don't Speak" by No Doubt, and "Mmmbop" by Hanson

Now I feel even older.

What were you doing in 1997?

I was ALSO purchasing as much lipgloss as possible. (Not really.)

Ricky Martin? Love it. He's on your desktop right now, isn't he? Don't fib to me, Susie.

I freak out when I realize 1997 is so long ago too! Mainly because that was the year I began my prep high school (it started in 7th grade, not 9th, I'm a few years younger than you) and it literally seems like yesterday. I was absolutely OBSESSED with Hanson (my BFF and I threw a "Hanson party" - we were the only two guests) and as you've read, I still dance to Barbie Girl (I also made a music video to it with my BFFs in 8th grade). I remember so many bubbly and fun and awkward times.... and now I feel ancient and old as well! 1997 was a great year!!!

Oh, also, I was purchasing every flavor of Bonne Bell lipgloss because that was the cool thing to do. My favorite was cake frosting. So good!

1997! I was just finishing up my awkward years. Not until 8th grade did I begin to, uh, grow into my looks/lose the baby fat! Also, I was completely freaked out the other day because I'm coming up on my 24th birthday and that means I can actually use the sentence, "I remember that. It was like 20 years ago." Or, "We've been friends for like, 20 years." SCARY!!!

Seventh grade. Loving Hanson.

I was in 7th grade in 1997. Mostly likely wearing pastel nail polish and carrying stuffed Tigger backpack purse.

I think I was in 8th grade, hanging posters of Ricky Martin in my locker and idolizing Tara Lipinski!

I love that you had Ricky Martin pics on your field hockey stick! In 1997 I was fretting about a boy. Pretty much the whole of the 90s was spent that way. No one was happier than me to greet the new century :)

1997! I graduated out of high school and went to college. I lived in away from my family for the first time, so I guess that was the first year of adult life for me :-)

Yea, I'm old. lol.

1997...hmm. I was 17, a senior in high school, first serious boyfriend, listening to Usher's first hits and rollerblading with my wide-leg jeans on. LOL!

Geez, 1997 really was a long time ago. I was in seventh grade and tragically wore a lot of turtlenecks. I also loved Hanson, and I had a strange obsession with collecting different colors of nailpolish from Bath & Body Works. Thank goodness I grew out of that phase.

I left school in 1997 and started my degree! Scary. I went to my first university punch party although I was still a week or two off eighteen at that point. What a great night that was! I also got my first job, working in a bakers and coffee shop, which I hated. It was before minimum wage was introduced so I was only getting £2.40 an hour! It's hard to believe that was over ten years ago now. I can't get my head around it. It's weird to think that films like "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "The Breakfast Club" are like twenty years old too! We're all getting so old! :(

in 1997, I hated Hanson... just like now. Some things just don't change!

I was in 7th grade, living in London. I definitely remember Princess Diana dying. What a time to live in London, I'll tell you.

I also remember 1997 as the year I ate a ridiculous amount of kettle corn. Strange, I know.

OK, all you kids whining, "I'm so olllld!" just need to stfu. :)

In '97 I think I was doing illegal things with people who liked to twirl glow sticks and occasionally showing up for my classes. Good times.

WOW. Total blast from the past. I feel old! I was in my junior year in college and I remembering dancing at fraternity parties to Barbie Girl and meeting up with my boyfriend at 10pm to watch South Park every week.

In 1997 hmmmmm....I was just getting good in my relationship with my boy, who I am still with today. I was working a full time job that I hated and quit not too long after I realized I hated it. And I was just figuring out how to be 20something.

I was 15. Started dating a really bad boy (who consequently introduced me to some bad things - Red Dog, illegal drugs, etc). I was listening to a lot of Ma$e and Puffy.

Oh and I BAWLED when Biggie died. Seriously.

I was a sophomore in high school, pining after the really hot, really unattainable guy in English class.

I was in my first love relationship in 1997. We went to my 10th grade formal and danced to "For You I Will" from Space Jam. It was romantic.

In 1997 I went to Nerd Camp before starting my senior year of high school. It pretty much rocked. I remember challenging some kids from the basketball camp in a game of pick-up basketball...the girls led a cheer of, "That's Alright! That's Okay! You'll All Work For Us One Day!!" And we won. And they probably do work for some of us. Nerds Rule!!

'96 ad '97 were probably my most favorite years ever.

I was in a 5th and 6th grade magnet school located in my future junior high.
I was crazy-obsessed with Hanson.
I had watched the Packers win Superbowl XXXI.
I went to countless sleepovers.
I was playing traveling basketball.
I curled my bangs everyday.

The songs from those two years always make me happy.
